Peel Western Australia
The Peel region, with its close proximity to Perth,
is a perfect destination for a day trip. Chenin Blanc and Shiraz
are regional specialties.
The region includes the Peel Inlet a large body of water just south
of Mandurah. The town of Williams lies on its eastern boundary.
The Mediterranean climate varies the further inland you travel,
as the cooling, moderating effects of the ocean diminish. The soils
vary across the region from 'tuart' sandy soil on the coast to loams
and gravelly soils further inland.
Peel has since its early days been an important agricultural and
mining area. As with much of Western Australia there were vineyards
established during the 1930s by Italian immigrants, but it wasn't
until the 1970s that sustained development took hold. They grow
Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Semillon and Verdelho and Cabernet Sauvignon,
Merlot and Shiraz.
A number of wineries have cellar doors, so whether you are day
tripping it from Perth or heading south to the Margaret River and
beyond, Peel is worth a stop.
Harvest time: mid February to mid March
