Wine regions - Swan Hill

Swan Hill   Victoria/New South Wales

The heat of the Swan Hill Region makes it perfect for the production of consistent quality mass-market grapes. Chardonnay is particularly successful.

The Murray River flows through the centre of the Swan Hill Region. Haysdale in Victoria marks the northern point of the boundary, which extends east to Kyalite in NSW and then swings back to the Victorian side of the Murray at Swan Hill. The main towns of the region lie along the Murray Valley Highway as does the vineyards and wineries.

The region has some important wine companies such as Brown Brothers whose vineyard at Mystic Park in the south, grows white and red varieties for table wine and fortifieds. The two largest wineries in the region Andrew Peace and R L Buller crush over 23,000 tonnes between them annually.

The region also has smaller boutique wineries who produce fine Cabernets, Shiraz, Chardonnay and Riesling as well as Italian varietials such as Durif and Sangiovese. You can find wineries with cellar doors along the Golden Mile Wine Trail which runs from Goodnight in the north of the region to Beverford in the south. A number of these cellar doors offer lunch and place to cool your heels on the banks of the Murray River.

The region is dependent on irrigation water from the Murray as summer rainfall is low and temperatures high in this consistent Mediterranean climate.

Swan Hill is part of the Murray-Darling food basket and as such has no shortage of wonderful local produce and excellent restaurants and accommodation facilities for the wine traveller on the Murray Outback Trail to experience.

Harvest time: mid February to April
