2008 Blue Pyreness Shiraz
As we hit the depths of winter, the frosts are thick on the ground and snow is falling in them thar hills, and minds and hearts turn to things that are solid and warming, full bodied and a bit cuddly. And that is exactly what this wine from Avoca in the Pyrenees offers - an uncomplicated deep dark, generous Shiraz, perfect for quaffing on these chilly evenings, especially matched to a slow cooked beef casserole or lamb with ratatouille.
Classic spicy Victorian Shiraz characters are displayed: a bright opaque purple colour with a rich nose, reminiscent of mulled wine and dark chocolate, showing aromatics of blackberry, black pepper, violets and cloves.
The palate combines the rich sweetness of berry and plum fruit with firm, savoury tannins, liquorice root and pepper spice on the finish. Pour a glass, curl up on the couch with a bit of Tex Perkins on the stereo and get cozy while the rain patters down outside.
