2011 Kirrihill Watervale Riesling
Watervale, Clare Valley, South Australia

Despite the variability of the weather, Summer is still here and Riesling goes hand in hand with warm sunshiny days and fresh seafood. No Clare producer would be caught without a Riesling in their portfolio and Kirrihill is quickly getting attention as a producer of heart winning wines at price points that constantly cause me to do a double take.
Speaking of doubles, the Kirrihill team led by the bubbly Donna Stephens, did a bit of a double act this vintage by harvesting this wine in two passes of the Slate Creek vineyard. And timely too - these grapes were well and truly harvested before the rains caused havoc in those vineyards not yet picked.
Generous lemon, lime fruit with some steely minerality zip along the long dry length. Drink with that fresh seafood or perhaps some Malaysian spiced prawns.
The fresh zestiness of this wine can be enjoyed now while it is still young, else this is a wine that you can keep to enjoy as it ages gracefully.
There is a sweeter dessert style of Watervale Riesling available too just in case you would like something to go with that cheeky apple flan.
