2011 Teusner Independent Shiraz Mataro
Barossa, South Australia

More often you will find the Spanish grape Mataro, also known as Mourvdre/Monastrell, blended in a jumble with its companions Grenache and Shiraz in the GSMs that are still loved by many Aussie red lovers. Kym Teusner has focused more simply on equal parts of peppery Shiraz and juicy Mataro, and once you have tasted this wine, you will not lament the lack of Grenache in this blend.
The black pepper spices up the raspberry and blueberry fruit and underpins the sweet floral aromas. A voluptuous blend that does not overstep the mark in any way, shape or form. Remaining medium bodied, silky textured and finishes as expressively as it starts.
While the Independent will take a few years in the cellar, it is fresh and vibrant now - so live in the moment and enjoy it with roast duck or venison and steamed seasoned veges fresh from the garden.
This is but one of Teusner's style setting wines capturing the boldness of the Barossa while targeting freshness and elegance. Also look out for their incredibly floral Avatar GSM. Or the very tasty Albert Shiraz 2011. This particular vintage has a parcel of grapes declassified from the Righteous vineyard due to the less-than-righteous 2011 vintage conditions ...
