History
of Strathbogie Ranges wine region
|
|
The wine region is relatively new having
obtained its official recognition (GI) in 2001.
The region consists of 2000 acres of vines with varying varietals, but
with its focus on Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and
Sauvignon Blanc.
The climate is defined as "cool climate" which means the grapes
have a slower, longer ripening period, providing smaller berries with
an intense flavour and colour.
Mt Helen Vineyard (now Drummonds Lane-neé Mt Helen) is the oldest
vineyard in the area, planting down in 1975, followed by Plunketts in
1976.
The area is serviced by two large commercial wineries Strathbogie Vitners
(Plunkett and Fowles) and ELgo Estate.
Tarup Ridge is a tiny boutique winery, with 5 acres of vines from which we produce
our wines (sauvignon blanc, riesling, pinot gris, cabernet sauvignon and shiraz).
These wines are available for guests of Tarup Lodge to purchase.
Tarup Lodge is situated adjacent to the vineyard and cellar door and located
centrally on 64 acres of farmland.
Harvest normally commences mid to late February.
